Ask The Experts, Real Facts About How Is Dandruff Related To Hair Loss?

By Eugene Yeng

Flaky scalp is not a life-threatening condition. As a matter of fact, almost half of the population has experienced it at least once. It can also strike at any age. It may not pose any serious health risks but a bad case of dandruff can be really annoying, which is why many sufferers choose to have it treated. Aside from being itchy and uncomfortable, having dandruff is also embarrassing. Some even claim to experience hair loss along with this skin disorder. How is dandruff related to hair loss?

As opposed to what others claim, flaky scalp and thinning of roots are definitely not connected. It may actually be caused by scratching the scalp. Flaky scalp often causes the scalp the itch, and scratching makes the roots weaker. Dandruff, in itself, cannot cause hair loss. Scratching is what weakens the hair strands, leading to loss of hair.

People who have thinning hair should take extra precaution against flaky scalp. The preliminary step in promoting hair growth is by protecting our scalp against flakes. There are several conditions that can make our scalp more prone to this condition. Skin disorders such as eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and psoriasis make the skin susceptible to dandruff.

Stress, poor eating habits, lack of hygiene and extreme temperatures have been discovered to irritate the scalp and cause flaking. Food items that are too sweet or have a high fat content are common culprits.

Flakes can be treated in no time with the right remedies. Use warm olive oil or coconut oil to relieve dryness. Massage onto scalp to promote better circulation and allow it to soak for 30 minutes. Rinse very well with water, taking care to wash off any remaining residue. Replace your old shampoo with a mild cleanser and use 2 to 3 times weekly.

Rubbing a slice of raw onion is effective as well. Replace ordinary shampoo with a mild variant and wash at least 3 times a week. Stay away from alcohol-based products as these dry out the scalp.

Keep your scalp nourished by taking supplements. Garlic oil and oregano are both effective in promoting hair growth. Flaxseed oil has high levels of Omega-3, which also encourages growth. This can be taken in capsule form or added to your diet by sprinkling over food. Poor metabolism and lack of complex carbohydrates also causes dandruff. Keep levels of fatty acids in balance by taking Vitamin B supplements.

The best way to banish flakes permanently is by eating nutritious food and by exercising regularly. These work better than any medication or remedy. Several reports revealed that those affected with flakes have thick and acidic skin oils on their scalp. This is caused by eating food with too much animal fat. Combat the harmful effects of saturated fat by eating fruits and vegetables, and replacing junk food by healthier alternatives like grains and nuts.
