The Naked Truth About Thinning Hair

By Bruce Wiley

As you grow older, not only do you grow wiser but as a sign of wisdom, you start losing your hair. Thin hair has been the result of time. But thin hair can result from a number of other things, which include but are not limited to hair coloring, bleaching, perming and the usual suspect - heredity. Bad diets and stress also have an adverse effect on the thickness of hair.

The following tips give you some advice on how to control hair thinning problems.

Dye your hair. Coloring your hair gives it the illusion of thickness, as the process would rough up your hair as a result. As your hair strands would slide against each other like so and lie flat afterwards, this makes your hair appear deceptively full. Lighter hair coloring can provide a better illusion by hiding the scalp.

Try curling your hair. The alteration of your hair's surface through curling or making it look wavy is another great way to deceive people (albeit nicely) into thinking you have more hair than you actually do.

Blow-drying. Blow drying the hair will make the hair two to three times thicker without harming the scalp. The blow-drying process makes your hair look puffier. To avoid making your hair feel excessively dry, it is recommended that the hair dryer be used about two to three times farther than normal. And have some conditioner ready after shampooing your hair to further avoid dryness after blow-drying.

Use protein shampoo daily. By washing your hair everyday, this eliminates oil from your hair, making it look much thicker than usual and more bountiful and bouncy. Using shampoos with hydrolyzed animal proteins, also called thickeners, they give the hair more diameter. They also make your hair appear two to three times thicker than usual because these shampoos coat the hair. Needless to say, your hair looks nice and fluffy like you would want it to be.

Use home-made conditioner. All you need is one tablespoon of white vinegar and one pint water - massage this onto your hair after you shampoo it. Vinegar changes the chemical balance of the hair to acidic and thus gives a full appearance to thinning hair.

Use eggs. That's right - one egg on your hair before shampooing can help. Massage it for five minutes and then rinse out. Because egg is a form of animal protein, this is a natural alternative to protein shampoos.

Use minimal commercial conditioners. The main intent of conditioners is to add diameter to the hair. But people use quantities more than required and thus give the hair a limp look. Always use a teaspoon of conditioner for every wash.

Mousse your hair. Finally, one last way to add diameter and thickness to your hair would be to style it with mousse. The resin content of mousse coats your hair, thus adding more diameter to it. You can get a fuller appearance to your hair as mousse can lift it off your scalp.
