Hair Falling Out? The Distinctive Features of Male Pattern and Female Pattern Baldness

By Dr Paul Conley

Whether you are male or female, beginning to lose hair from your head can be a frightening experience, not to mention the sensation of humiliation that will follow. Your self esteem is certain to drop, but there are a range of solutions that will help you to regain lost hair and improve hair quality. First, though, it's critical to understand the problem that you are running into and to spot the pattern in which you see hair falling out.

There are two sorts of hair loss that are common, though men are more susceptible to hair loss than women. The most typical reason for hair loss is androgenic alopecia, often referred to as androgenetic alopecia. This condition is the by-product of a substance called DHT, obstructing the follicles on the scalp, restricting new hair growth. This is the most typical reason that you are going to notice hair falling out.

This condition is usually separated into two forms; male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness. There are treatments, such as Propecia, for all of these types and, to be sure, you can find a hair loss treatment which will have a good chance of working for you, if you carefully watch how you lose hair over a period of time.

In the case of male pattern baldness, you will usually first see reduced hair around the temple area on the head. This is commonly referred to as a receding hairline and is common in men, even at a young age, although the condition is most typical in older men. Male pattern baldness then advances to the apex of the head, or the vertex. The male condition regularly sees hair loss continuing gradually, until the crown of the head is almost completely bald.

By contrast, female pattern baldness isn't generally first noticed at the front of the head. In this instance, the hairline often remains untouched, but thinning starts on the top of the head. Ladies will then often see hair falling out on the side of the head around the ears. This pattern is discernible from male pattern baldness, particularly since the front of the head is often untouched by hair loss.

Of course, there are more factors behind hair loss that can sometimes be happening. Another common cause of hair loss is telogen effluvium, a general thinning and loss of hair from every area of the body, including the head. This illness has its own specific treatments though, it has a tendency to resolve itself naturally within six to eight months.

If you are experiencing the loss of hair, it's critical that you observe the pattern of hair loss that's happening. While male pattern baldness is most usual in men, and female pattern baldness is most typical in ladies, it is sometimes possible for men to encounter the female pattern and vice-versa. It is just by exactly determining the type of hair loss you're subjected to, you can begin to go searching for a good quality hair loss treatment, that will help you towards new growth.

If you are in any doubt about the precise pattern in which your hair is falling out, consult your doctor who will be more able to spot the general signs of each distinct, hair loss condition. By identifying your type of hair loss, either alone, or with professional help, you can begin to search for a hair care regime or medical solution that can stop hair falling out.
