Myths Surrounding Hair Loss In Women

By Janine Hermosa

There's just no stopping the growing interest in hair loss in women. The condition is real and therefore a hot topic to tackle. Because so many people are talking about it though, there is also a proliferation of inaccurate information. This makes it distressing for real sufferers to look for data they can trust. Before you believe anything you read about female hair loss, there are couple of myths that need to be corrected.

#1- There is only one cause that can be blamed for the condition.

Most men who go bald are affected by both genes and hormones. For a time, it was thought that women too are influenced by the same causal factors. It has since been discovered though that hair problems in women are far more complicated. Women may indeed lose hair because of drops in estrogen levels. In fact, this is a common cause among females who do have the condition, but they may also lose hair because of illness and stress.

#2- Old women are the only ones who need to worry.

Females usually suffer from widespread hair thinning instead of sectional baldness. This is most likely the reason why you might notice that older females in your family have less thick locks. It is incorrect to believe though that only old women have this condition. Young women may fall severely ill or they may go through periods of hormonal fluctuations that can make hair loss possible. Women who go through childbirth for example may experience excessive hair fall a few months after giving birth because of a drop in their estrogen levels.

#3- The hair stylist can cause the loss of hair in women.

There is a prevailing belief among many individuals that frequent trips to the hair salon can cause hair fall. While it is true that frequent styling can damage the quality of hair, there is no truth that it is the main culprit in hair loss. At the most, hair will go dry with too much treatment application. The only real danger to hair styling is if you choose to go for tight hair styles such as braids and corn rolls. These can uproot the hair and cause scars to form that can impede hair growth.

#4- The condition can be completely stopped.

You can help yourself grow healthier hair if the causes of its loss are related to illness and stress. You might not be able to do much though if the cause is hormonal in nature. If you qualify for hormone replacement therapy, you might get your old locks back but there are individuals who aren't good candidates for it. You might also opt to take minoxidil but you can't expect dramatic results out of it. You can't take more than a very small amount because huge amount aren't safe for female intake. Researchers are still clearly out there looking for better solutions to the problem.

Hair loss in women has definitely become very interesting for a lot of people. If you're looking for details though, you should be very careful with what you read.
